In this blog, I will be talking about my sophomore-year journey in Web Development/Design.
Introduction
In my sophomore year of high school, I had a new teacher for my program, Mr. Choate. In the beginning, I thought he was very strict and we won’t have that much fun this year. But I was wrong, he was a very nice and fun teacher. This was his first time teaching so I used to think he would not be that knowledgable. But in fact, I was wrong again. He was not only very knowledgeable but he could explain things in simple ways. One of the first projects he gave us was working with WordPress.
WordPress
Everyone in the class was very new to WordPress and had no idea about the things in WordPress. Mr. Choate said we needed to create a styled homepage on WordPress and add blogs for better SEO (Search Engine Optimization). For this project, I created a homepage based on Lionel Messi and his current team Inter Miami. I had the color scheme as the team’s jersey color. I also had an image of Messi because he is the greatest player of all time.
Logo
Mr. Choate said we need to create a logo for our website because people need to know about our brand. Once again I decided to go with Messi and Inter Miami theme for my logo. I did not put too much effort into this project because I didn’t really like designing at the beginning of my Sophomore year that’s the reason why my logo is not very eye-catching. I decided to add my initials (PB) for my logo with a hexagon shape in Adobe Illustrator.
Then for the color scheme, I decided to go with the Inter Miami jersey color because I love Messi and it would go well with my website because my website’s color scheme was also Inter Miami color scheme. At the beginning of my sophomore year, I learned a lot about WordPress.
FBLA
After I had learned a lot about WordPress I decided to compete at a web design competition from FBLA. I had Daniel and Layla on my team and my team came 1st place at the State Leadership Conference for website design. If you want to learn about my experience in website design you can read my blog.
Typography
We also had a project on typography where we had to create custom fonts in Adobe Illustrator. I decided to add serifs to mine and give it a modern look to make it easier for the readers. During my sophomore year, I studied a lot about fonts and used this knowledge about fonts on my FBLA website. If you see the FBLA website you can see how the fonts look very clean and it’s also easy to read for the readers on the website.
JavaScript Timer
I also created a timer by using a coding JavaScript coding language. This project was one of the hardest for me because I had no idea about JavaScript and how it works. During this time of my sophomore year, I was very tired due to JavaScript because it was very difficult to understand for me. I watched a lot of videos and asked my peers for some help and then I was finally done with that project and then winter break began.
Field Trip
After we returned from winter break, we went on a field trip to Harrisburg University. I learned a lot about the digital world when I went to the University and I decided that I wanted to go there after high school. Memories
Like a wise person once said, “All great things come to an end”. This great year has come to an end. Good luck to Puskhar, Armani, and Mahdi next year for senior year. Daniel, you better not leave next year. Srijan, you’re stuck with me for the next 2 years.
