In this blog, I will share my experience at Harrisburg University during my school field trip.
Harrisburg University Background
Harrisburg University of Science and Technology was founded in 2001 and it was the first independent STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) university in Pennsylvania. This institute collected $12 million in 2003 from state capitol funding. The campus is 371,000 square feet and 16 stories tall and is located in downtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
About My Trip?
On January 23, 2024, my web classmates and I went to this campus and got to experience the amazing university in our city Harrisburg. We also met many professors who gave us a lot of important information about the college and what it is like to be a student at Harrisburg University. That day, we did many fun activities at the college and learned about different careers in Information Technology (IT).
CyberSecurity Activity
During our trip, we started with a fun cybersecurity activity where we had to play a game and solve some cases that involved cybersecurity knowledge. The professors at NuPaths gave us laptops where we played the game, and for every case we solved we received fake bitcoins and at the end of the game whichever team had the most bitcoins would get a free t-shirt from NuPaths. This part of the field trip was very fun because I am very interested in cybersecurity and in this station, I learned a lot about this topic and how hackers get into people’s accounts.
Meeting The Professors And Employers!
In this activity, we had to meet some professors and employers and they told us about their companies and Harrisburg University. There were around 5 stations and in each station, we spent about 8-10 minutes and learned about their different companies.
We first met Jamie Sarah from JPL, who is a Project Manager at JPL company and he leads most of the projects from beginning to finish. I loved this station and Mr. Jamie was very open-minded about his work and the challenges he faces in his company. JPL also offers internships and I am very interested in joining JPL when I get the opportunity to and I would love to work with Mr. Jamie as his employee.
Our next stop was Korporate Computing and at this station, we met Kathy Stickley, she told us about her career and how she went from military to working at Korporate Computing. According to Kathy Stickley, their company offers IT services for businesses to grow their profit securely. This company solves the IT issues that their clients are having and provides a bunch of different solutions. I think this station was really fun and I would love to learn more about the Korporate Computing.
Then, my friends and I went to our third station which was to meet the professors of Harrisburg University. The professors told us about the different classes at the college and if we choose the major that they teach then we could become their students. I was less worried about my career in this part because they told my group that even though there are lots of students who do not have too much knowledge about Computer Science they are doing fine and have bright careers ahead of them.
Lunch
After my friends and I had visited all of the stations it was time for lunch and the food the University prepared was very delicious. To be honest, I loved this part of the day because I was so hungry that my stomach was growling. University provided us with different types of sandwiches and chips and this gave us some time to have fun and rest after all of the stations and activities we had done.
University Tour!
After lunch, my school group was split into 2 groups, 1 group was freshmen and seniors and the other group was sophomores and juniors. We went to various classrooms and learned about what each classroom is for and what happens in that classroom. My favorite classroom was the one where there was a very big PC that the students created themselves and this caught my eye and I was very into that classroom. Then, one of the students showed us his codes and the coding language he was using. He used the same platform to code as us which is called VisualStudio (VS) Code.
Then, my group and I went to a different building where Harrisburg University has its robots and this place was so fun to watch. To get there we had to go through Strawberry Square which has various stores inside. After we viewed the robots we went back to Harrisburg University and there our teacher Mr.Choate told us to go where our bus was.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Harrisburg University is a very fun college to attend and has many different careers which leads to having a bright future. During this field trip, I got to meet many different people who have different knowledge about computers and the IT world.
